I am excited to share a new resource designed for speech therapists: A Clinical Guide to Informal Assessment of Cantonese Compounding in School-Age Children.

I developed this guide to address a potential gap in our current clinical toolkit. Despite compounding being the most productive word-formation process in Cantonese, there is currently no dedicated clinical manual available for assessing these specific skills.

In everyday practice, morphology is frequently an overlooked area of language assessment. We often focus heavily on syntax and semantics, but a child's difficulty with language is sometimes rooted in the very building blocks of words. Failing to examine how a child understands and constructs compound words can lead to an incomplete diagnosis and missed opportunities for targeted therapy.

This guide provides a practical, flexible framework to evaluate both a child's underlying linguistic knowledge and their real-time performance. My hope is that this resource will help clinicians to address this area of language development, leading to more precise diagnoses and impactful interventions.
